brings home National Costume prize
Miss Thailand Universe Gavintra Photijak (also spelled Gawintra Phothijakra) won the National Costume award at the Miss Universe Pageant in Nha Trang, Vietnam.

Gawintra competed in the Miss Universe pageant, which this year was held in Nha Trang, Vietnam on July 14, 2008. At 5' 10", the towering beauty from Chonburi Province -- daughter of a Royal Thai Navy officer -- is the tallest among the six contestants from Southeast Asia.
Gavintra wore a dramatic caped Muay Thai-inspired costume, which was designed by Khon Kaen University student Sathapat Mulma. The costume was chosen by voters on www.NBC.com who thought her national costume "best reflected her country's culture, originality in preparation and the delegate's personal demeanor". She received a $1,000 cash prize and a trophy from Rogaska Crystal, according to a press release.

คณะทำงานกองประกวดมิสไทยแลนด์ยูนิเวิร์ส เปิดเผยว่า น้องแก้มได้รับความสนใจเป็นอย่างมากจากผู้ชมในการโชว์ชุดประจำชาติ เนื่องจากทุกๆ ปีที่ผ่านมาชุดประจำชาติของสาวงามจากเมืองไทย เน้นความสวยงามอ่อนช้อยตามแบบฉบับสาวไทย ทว่าในปีนี้เมื่อน้องแก้มปลดผ้าคลุมชุด ก็เรียกเสียงฮือฮาเมื่อเผยให้เห็นชุดมวยคาดเชือกโบราณ พร้อมสาธิตท่าไหว้ครูแม่ไม้มวยไทยที่ดูสง่างามและแข็งแกร่งเข้ากับรูปแบบชุด ได้รับเสียงปรบมือเกรียวกราวและยาวนานกว่าสาวงามรายอื่นๆ ที่ส่วนใหญ่เพียงแค่สวมชุดประจำชาติเดินโชว์ตัว
As for the other Asian contestants, Miss Vietnam Lam Thuy Nguyen ranked 11th and Miss Japan Hiroko Mima was 13th.

Miss Universe crown went to Miss Venezuela, Dayana Mendoza.

First runner-up is Miss Colombia Taliana Vargas, second runner-up is Miss Dominican Republic Marianne Cruz Gonzalez. Miss Mexico Elisa Najera and Miss Russia Vera Krasova rounded out the top five. Miss El Salvador Rebeca Moreno was named Miss Congeniality.

Miss Thailand Universe's 'fighting spirit'
Called "Spirit of Fighting", the maroon costume was fashioned from a pair of Muay Thai boxer's shorts, decorated with a golden bow at the waist and trimmed with bracelets and anklets. It also features a hooded cape.

Sathaphat says he was inspired by how foreigners have often told him that muay thai is the first thing that comes to mind when they think of Thailand and how Thai women have become influential in the workforce.

"To reflect that strength, I wanted to show how Thais have the fighting spirit," he says.

Gawintra is pretty pleased with the outfit she'll wear in the Miss Universe pageant's national-costume competition.

"I like this one the most because it reflects my personality," she says, explaining that while femininity is important in beauty pageants, she's more the outgoing, playful type.

Presumably the midriff-baring Muay Thai costume has enough "Thainess" to pass muster with the Cultural Surveillance Center. Cultural watchdogs panned the outfit of 2007 Miss Thailand Universe Farung Yuthithum for being too ethnic. However, Thai journalists aren't too sure about some of Gawintra's other outfits. At a press conference in Bangkok, nervous reporters voiced concern that at least one of the evening gowns she'll be wearing in the competition is a little too revealing.

"The confidence is what comes first," she told them, displaying a good measure of hers. That's what wins the day, she said, not the costume.
